  • Pinewood Derby Proves a Hot Ticket

    James Walling, The Courier|Feb 3, 2016

There are performances in big cities that would be tickled with the turnout enjoyed by Pack 898 at the St. Raphael's Parish Center gymnasium last Thursday night. The mood was relaxed, but attendees (the adult variety) numbered well over 100 at this year's Pinewood Derby event. Non-scout kids milled around the racecourse and cheered along with parents, other scouts, and scouting-affiliated helpers. In the bleachers, Glasgow's Ann Kulczyk and Jimmy Freuh were among those looking forward to "open c...

  • City Discusses Furloughs, Grant Monies

    James Walling, The Courier|Feb 3, 2016

The Feb. 1 meeting of the Glasgow City Council was a mixture of good news and bad. In the latter category, the council announced that hoped-for resiliency grant monies from the federal government in the amount of $18.1 million were awarded to other areas of the country thought to be in greater need. Many of the recipients were cities with larger populations and areas currently suffering critical damage to key infrastructure. Following on the heels of grant disbursements totaling nearly $700,000,...

  • Poplar Man Stabbed to Death

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 3, 2016

On Monday, Feb. 1, at about 9:30 a.m., Poplar resident Robert Todd Pinkerton Jr. was fatally stabbed once in the chest by an unidentified female. The female turned herself into police shortly after the incident and was placed into tribal custody. The victim was found in a home on the 500 block of D Street East in Poplar, and transported by ambulance to the Poplar hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Ken Trottier, supervisory criminal investigator for the Fort Peck Tribes, said the woman and the victim were in a romantic relationship and it...

  • Quality Time? I Think Not

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Feb 3, 2016

Do you want to spend more quality time with your family? Are you sick to death with all those pharmaceutical commercials on TV? Do you scramble for the mute button every time a gorgeous female starts spouting the virtues of a certain bedroom enhancement pill that could cause you to have a four hour medical catastrophe requiring a doctor? Do three or five sportscasters talking at once while yucking’ it up like a bunch of southern hillbillies make your ‘hears’ close shut? If you answered yes to any or all of the above then you have a problem. If...

  • Celebrate More

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just a Thought|Feb 3, 2016

I’m celebrating. Actually my granddaughter and I are celebrating. She and I will go shopping and she will choose where we have lunch. And she is going to do all the driving. Because we are celebrating her receiving her driver’s license. When she told me she was taking driver’s education last summer, I promised her a day of shopping and having lunch to celebrate her getting her license. So now it’s time to keep that promise. But we are not only celebrating her obtaining her driver’s license. We are celebrating her determination to get that lice...

  • In Defense of Year-Round Grazing

    Sean Gerrity, American Prairie Reserve|Feb 3, 2016

I appreciate this opportunity to address some apparent confusion regarding American Prairie Reserve’s request to the Bureau of Land Management concerning a potential change-of-use on our Flat Creek BLM allotment. Specifically, we asked that bison be allowed to graze year-round versus part of the year. This request is similar to year-round requests other local livestock producers have been granted. We also asked to remove interior fences on the Flat Creek allotment. There are a number of reasons why we are confident that year-round grazing w...

  • Be Proud, Glasgow

Ryan Hartwell, Letter To The Editor|Feb 3, 2016

LTE: My Saturday started as any other, besides the fact my daughter and I had our first practice for a 5th grade girls basketball team. While going through drills, Jon Kolstad stuck his head in the church gym door. I shouted at him to come in and he asked if some high school girls could use the other half of the court to shoot around. I told him that was ok and continued with the practice. We finished conditioning and were having a final team meeting on the base line when Jon and the girls came over. With those 5th grade girls eyes as big as...

  • Seeking Common Ground

    Tess Fahlgren, Truth Nukem|Feb 3, 2016

A few weeks ago I wrote about the Bundy militia takeover of a government building in Oregon. I pointed out the discrepancies between the way racial justice activists and these men have been treated by the media. Since then, 55-year-old Robert “LaVoy” Finicum has been shot by the FBI and eight others were arrested, including Ammon Bundy. It is always tragic when the FBI kills a citizen. To be clear: I am absolutely not condoning the death of anyone in this situation. Since I began writing this sporadic column, I’ve had a lot of uncom...

  • Gun Control Measures Do 'Nothing' for Victims

    Steve Daines, Political Opinion|Feb 3, 2016

As a lifelong sportsman and gun owner, I’m committed to protecting law-abiding Americans’ right to keep and bear arms. And like many Montanans, I know that protecting the Second Amendment isn’t about hunting—it’s about freedom. President Obama started off the new year by unilaterally creating new barriers to purchasing a firearm. His actions are an affront to our Second Amendment rights and a gross abuse of executive power. And like so many times before, President Obama has pursued a “go-it-alone” approach on his gun control agenda. These...

  • Film Shorts: Valley Cinemas, Streaming, The Worx

    D.K. Holm, For The Courier|Feb 3, 2016

The third Kung Fu Panda prevails at Valley Cinemas this week, with the theater adding Sisters. This is a Tina Fey and Amy Pohler comedy that flips the usual expectation that Ms Pohler would be the messy, drunken, white trash sister, with Ms Fey playing as usual the uptight square. Its slim premise has the two sisters in Florida dealing with their childhood home, which their aging parents (James Brolin, Dianne Wiest) are selling off. A house party ensues, among other tedious things. The large cast is padded out with Saturday Night Live staffers...

  • Children Museum Donation

Pictured presenting the check to Museum Director Stacy Fast, center, are guild Treasurer Jean Carlson, right, and guild President Janice Lawrence, left. • Decisive Win over Poplar Brings Scotties Closer to Tournament

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Feb 3, 2016

The Scottie boys rose to the occasion and got the win they needed. And they didn't just scrape by with coming-down-to-the-wire free throws. They beat the Poplar Indians by 15 points at the Moccasin Square Garden on Jan. 29. It was their highest winning margin over a conference foe so far this season. Any conference win they can muster will help them avoid the playoff game between the fourth and fifth seeds, a game in which the loser will be barred from the district tournament. The tournament is...

  • U19 Girls Go 3-1 Against NoDak Teams

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 3, 2016

Friday night was not a good night for the Lady Ice Dawgs. Facing off against the U19 girls from Bottineau, they were unable to score even a single goal. Senior goalie, Autumn Gault was able to deny 38 goals, but it wasn't enough to stop Bottineau. They managed to score six times – twice on power plays, and the game ended with a score of 6-0. With a good nights rest behind them, Glasgow hit the ice Saturday to take on Langdon in a late morning game. In a nearly penalty free effort, the Lady I...

  • Porcupines Split Games Against Dodson

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 3, 2016

It was a good match-up between the Nashua Porcupines and the Dodson Coyotes. The boys and girls met in the Nashua Gymnasium for Friday night’s contests. For the boys, it appeared to be a battle of the stats between the top two scorers of the game, starting senior Lane Nickels of Nashua and Tyrese Messerly of Dodson. Nickels scored 9 of his 15 points from beyond the arc; Messerly answered back with 12 of his 21 coming from downtown. At the free-throw line, Nickels went 2 for 2, while Messerly sunk 5 of 5. While Messerly won the battle, N...
