The Forty-first Annual Christmas Bird Count was held on Dec. 19. A record number of 60 species were found during the daylong count which covered a circle 15 miles in diameter centered at the flagpole circle in Ft. Peck. There were 14 participants, including four field teams of three and two window watchers. We drove a total of 220 miles and walked six and a half, and temperatures ranged from 19 to 27 degrees. The North Country Mavericks traveled to Nashua Thursday night for two games against the Porcupines. The varsity girls started off the evening just a little after 6 p.m. The Lady Mavs undoubtedly dominated the entire contest, but the scrappy Lady Porcupines didn't go down without a fight. The Lustre Christian Lions traveled to Poplar to face the Indians for their first game of the new year on Tuesday, Jan. 5. The Lady Lions took to the court in the first game of the night, and if not for the slow start in the first quarter of the game, the contest may have had a different outcome. Last week, in two separate stings in Texas and California, the FBI arrested two Iraqi refugees for connections to terrorism. These individuals were screened in accordance with the Obama Administration’s “rigorous” vetting standards, which include interviews, fingerprinting and running refugees’ names against databases.
