On Tuesday last the Coyotes from Dodson visited the Hinsdale Raiders, and while visiting decided to play a couple basketball games. Stay tuned and I’ll tell you about them. The girls' game featured some pretty good play from the hometown Hinsdale Lady Raiders after a very shaky start. Here’s what happened. Hinsdale controlled the tip to Megan Funk, who passed to Kendra Canen. She, immediately if not sooner, noticed Claire Fjeld open under the hoop and fired off a pass, which Claire snagged and put up and in for 2 pernts. Now this is where it got dicey. Dodson inbounded the ball and headed down court (or was it up court). At about the center stripe the defense faded and allowed the Lady Coyotes a clean, easy, uncontested layup and 2 game-tying points. This did not sit too well with coach Ellsworth, who asked his players who’s fault that was, but no one knew what happened. Coach Ralph walked down his bench and took the first five players and told them to go check in. So at about the 6:30 mark of the first quarter, the JV squad got the chance to shine. Tori Arnold, Sam Ryan, Lacey Mogan, Chateau Christensen and Hannah Jones built up an 8-point lead by the time the first quarter came to an end, 12-4. His starters were looking so dejected that coach Ralph took pity on them and re-inserted them back into the contest to begin the second eight minutes. Coach told me after the game that when the starters went back in the game, one of them was heard to remark, “I hope we don’t blow their lead.” But they played well for the remainder of the game with everyone getting some playing time, which was good considering there was no JV girls' game. Claire was high scorer for the game knocking down 13 points, including 3 of 4 from the charity stripe. She was also high rebounder, grabbing seven offensive and three defensive rebounds. Sam Ryan scored 9 points with one 3-pointer included and was perfect from the free throw line. Hannah Jones scored 6 points and grabbed three rebounds while Trish Remmich scored three of four from the freebie area. Megan Funk nailed a 3 and had three rebounds. Mandy Beil, Chrystal Mavencamp and Tori Arnold each scored a couple points each. Tori grabbed six rebounds and Chrystal hauled down three herownself. While Kendra Canen, Bailey Remmich, Chateau Christensen and Lacey Mogan failed to put up points, they all were instrumental in the Hinsdale Lady Raiders win 40-31 over the Lady Coyotes of Dodson. The Lady Raiders shot a very respectable 8 of 11 from free throw range. Good game ladies. Just prior to the boys' game, the Dodson players and coach presented an autographed basketball and the townspeople of Dodson gave condolences to the Younkin family. There have been some heated battles between these two basketball programs in the past but they always shake hands and congratulate each other on a good game when it is all finished. Good on you Dodson. That was a “Class Act.” This would be a banner game for the Hinsdale Raiders, not because they won, not because they played well, but ... I’ll tell you in a minute or so. Kirk Capdeville scored the game high 12 points while soaring for five rebounds and assisting thrice times. He was perfect from the free throw line. Chase Younkin had 8 pernts and four rebbies along with three steals. Justin Pattison scored 8 points all in the paint and grabbed a game high six rebounds while missing just one bunny and it was a tough shot. I told you so didn’t I? Oh, and let me just say hi and thank you for the kind words to Verna Pattison. Seems Verna is one of my 12 readers and actually has a subscription to the Courier. (As you all should have). But, I digress. Also draining 8 points was Brady (Big Lumbah) Johnson. He was perfect from the charity stripe. Are you sensing a pattern here yet? Greg Lacock scored 4 points on what I consider the best jump shot in the district. He also had four assists. Cole Albus also scored 4 points on a field goal and ... wait, here it comes … a perfect 2 for 2 from free range. Count ‘em up friends. It may not sound like much to you, but it’s huge from a team that traditionally shoots below 50 percent from the line. The Hinsdale Raiders were unblemished from the free throw line tonight. Kirk went 6 for 6 with one questionable until the very end when it circled the drain and disappeared through the net while Brady and Cole hit 2 for 2 each. Taylor Olson hammered home a crowd-pleasing three from deep downtown as did Tate Ryan III. Tate also grabbed four rebounds. Drake Molina, Arlie Armbrister and Chaz Johnson also saw some playing time. The buzzer buzzed with the final score Hinsdale Raiders 52, Dodson Coyotes 17. I would mention the Dodson team is very young, and if they keep improving as they have this year, they will be a ‘reck to be forcened’ with next year, I’m sure. That Brett Jaynes kid is a good ball handler and freshman Rocky Lewis at 5’11” can hit from deep or mix it up around the basket. Good game guys. That’s it for now folks. Thanks for listening.
