In a rousing finish, the Glasgow High School Ice Dawgs edged the Glasgow Men's Ice Dawgs 9-8 at the first Skate 4 A Cure hockey game.
A crowd packed the Valley Event Center for the event, which benefitted Northeast Montana Relay for Life.
The game started off at a hot pace as the men showed their strength early in the game. Just a few seconds into the game 2002 graduate Brad Tribby scored a goal on an assist from 2008 graduate Kyle Enebo. Tribby would score an unassisted goal a few minutes later to give the alumni a 2-0 lead.
Junior forward Kevin Hill cut into the lead for the high school team when he got an assist from  sophomore Jonathan Braaten to net a goal.
Tribby answered the goal just a few minutes later by completing his hat trick in the first period, scoring his third goal of the game on an assist by 1982 graduate Tom Pewitt.
Not to be outdone, Jonathan Braaten put on a show in the second period. The speedster scored an unassisted goal before the first period ended to bring the high school team back to within a goal of the lead, then tied up the game early in the second on assists from seniors Karston Waarvik and Emily Braaten. After a goal by Pat Braaten put the men back in the lead, Jonathan got another assist from his sister to tie the score at 4-4 and complete the natural hat trick.
Jake Mattfeldt and Johnny Peterson scored goals for their teams to keep the team score tied at 5-5 as the teams entered the third period.
Two early goals by Jonathan Braaten and junior Kori Meiers gave the high school team their largest lead of the game early in the third period, but it didn't last long.
Within two minutes the mens' team exploded into the lead, 8-7, with three quick goals. Pat Braaten scored an unassisted goal then proceeded to assist Greg Belt on a goal to tie the game. Stevin Miller scored the go ahead goal with 14:25 left in the game.
But just as it seemed the old guys had taught the kids their lesson, the high school team slowly regained the momentum. Meiers scored again to tie the game 8-8, as both teams locked down on defense.
As the clock ticked down it looked like the game may have had to end in a tie. The last few seconds may have eased up the alumni's defense as Mattfeldt slipped a shot by the alumni goalie to give the high school team a 9-8 lead with only five seconds remaining in the game.
Even with a clock malfunction that gave the alumni a few more seconds to make a shot, no more shots were fired and the clock expired on an extremely successful maiden voyage for the charity hockey game.
Tribby and Jonathan Braaten were presented with sweatshirts for earning player of the game honors for their respective teams.
After the game, it was announced that a Wolf Point resident was drawn as the winner of a new Dodge Challenger.
“We really had a great time,” said Brenda Leckie, who along with Tribby organized the event for Relay for Life. “The crowd was great and I hope we can do it again next year.”
