The Glasgow wrestling team hosted its first tournament of the year this weekend and left no question as to who is the best team in Class B-C. The wrestlers started the week with a mixer in Lewistown, where they had a chance to face off against some Class AA schools in C.M. Russell High and Great Falls High. Though the Scotties came out flat, co-head coach Byron Hallock said, most of the wrestlers ended up with good showings. On Saturday, the Scotties were able to show off in their first home meet of the season, where they hosted Chinook, Big Sandy, Malta, Wolf Point, Lewistown, Circle, Harlem, Sidney and Poplar. The Scotties, who had eight wrestlers ranked in the first Class B-C rankings of the year, came out strong and got eight kids to the finals. In his first weekend of competition this season, Jacob Bethea made quick work of the 112-pound weight class. Bethea needed only 34 seconds to pin Malta's Chris Doney in the championship. His preliminary fights weren't much longer with one lasting only eight seconds. Zeb Shawver didn't take much longer to run through the 119-pound weight class. Shawver finished Circle's Flynn Stormer in only 40 seconds. Braden Hallock finished second at 125 pounds but will be looking soon to make the jump back down to 119 with Shawver, giving the Scotties two of the top wrestlers in the state at the weight. Luke Zeiger, Chaz Hopstad, Parker Miller and Tyrel Shumway, all ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes, easily won all by pinfall within two minutes of the first period. The only champion who took a decision was 140-pound Ryan Bergtoll, who walked away with a 10-7 victory over Lewistown's Dexter Trask. “A few kids had a couple of letdowns,” Byron Hallock said. “But other than that we can't complain with what we had in the finals.” The team will be heading to Gillette, Wyo., this weekend to take part in the Pat Weede Wrestling Tournament. The meet gives the Scotties an opportunity to compete in duels, something that their current schedule doesn't have a lot of. There is a mix of teams from three states at the tournament, but the only teams that will be familiar are Gillette, Wyo. and Sidney, who the Scotties will see a lot this season. “It's a lot of fun because we don't normally get to dual anybody,” Byron Hallock said. “We don't know much about any of the teams we're wrestling but we'll find out Friday and Saturday what we're getting ourselves into.” The team will have four duals on Friday and three on Saturday. The Scotties will start off against Centaurus (Colo.) at 10 a.m. on Friday. Click Here To See More Stories Like This |
