Mickey Whitlow

Published: Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Mickey (Randolph) Whitlow, 79, died at his home in Green Valley, Ariz., on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009.
A memorial service will be held at the Evangelical Church in Glasgow at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.
He was born in June of 1930 in South Boston, Va., the youngest of 12 children. He received his formative schooling in Virginia, then joined the U.S. Air Force in 1947. He served our country for three years while stationed in Spokane, Wash., where he also married his wife, Ada May Tonjum, in 1949. They moved to Scobey in 1950, where they took over the Tonjum family farm south of Four Buttes and raised their family.
He farmed for 25 years and opened a Butler business franchise in 1961, selling and erecting grain bins, both agricultural and commercial steel buildings. In 1970 he expanded their operations by adding two bowling alleys, one in Scobey and the other in Crosby, N.D. The Scobey bowling alley was one of his favorite enterprises as he could visit, cook, play cards and give all a bad time.
He and his wife moved to Glasgow in 1975 where the Butler business had been centrally located and they lived there 23 years. He was very active over the years, working with organizations and serving on various boards. After 49 years of the snowy, cold winters, Mickey and his wife moved to Green Valley, Ariz., in the spring of 1998. They came back to Scobey to celebrate their 50th Anniversary in 1999 and their 60th in Green Valley in May of 2009.
He was a passionate man in his giving, encouraging and hospitality. He was active in church, including missions and the Gideons. He was a volunteer during baseball’s spring training, which next to playing, was a dream come true. He will always be remembered for his generosity and willingness to be of help wherever and whenever needed.
Survivors include his wife, Ada; children, Randy Whitlow and his wife, Laurie, of Reno, Nev., Cathy Brenna of Green Valley, Ariz., Gene Whitlow of Green Valley, and Terry Whitlow and his wife, Christy, of Colorado Spring, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters.
