Volleyball defeats Malta, Poplar

The Glasgow volleyball team earned two wins at home this week, beating Malta 3-1 on Saturday and Poplar 3-0 on Tuesday.

Both games went relatively fast as the experienced Scotties beat up on younger teams.

In the sweep of Poplar, the Indians pressured Glasgow in two sets, before succumbing in the third. Poplar was tied as late as 20-20 in the second set, but the Scotties pulled away and won the last five points of the set.

The final set was finished quickly by the Scotties, who finally found a rhythm in the third set, winning 25-16.

Against Malta, the game didn't run quite as smoothly.

After winning the first set easily 25-13, the Scotties lost their focus at the end of the second set, surrendering a huge run to Malta, who took the set 26-24.

That set must have jolted them back to life because the next two sets went fast, with Glasgow winning easily, 25-16 and 25-11.

While both games may have gone quickly, they served as a warm up to the team's senior night game against Glendive on Saturday. The Red Devils beat Glasgow earlier this year in Glendive, 3-1, but the Scotties are looking for revenge.

“I really think we have what it takes to compete with Glendive and to beat Glendive, if we play our hardest all of the time,” head coach Lori Dailey said.

The Scotties tried to take Glendive out of its power game in the last match by trying to reverse flow and keep their team off balance. But, the plan went out the window when the Scotties' passing game started to deteriorate.

“If we can serve a little more aggressively, it'll take them out of their game because their passing will break down,” Dailey said. “They're a hitting team, which generally equals less of a ball-handling team.”

Dailey said she feels the Scotties are strong in both hitting and passing, and if the serving can be tough, the Scotties should have a chance to knock off the bigger school.

“It should be a great match,” Dailey said. “It should be a really even matchup.”

The Saskatoon Police Pipe Band, in town for Homecoming weekend, will play between the junior varsity and varsity volleyball games on Saturday. The night is also senior parent night and the Scotties' three seniors will be recognized at the game.
