Duane Julien

Published: Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Duane Julien, 62, of Anthem, Ariz., and Bozeman, Mont., died of a lengthy illness on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at the Unity Church of Bozeman, with the Reverend Philip A. Zemke officiating, followed by an informal repast in the church social hall.

Duane was born in Duluth, Minn., on March 6, 1947. In 1948, his family relocated to California, where he developed his enthusiasm for the outdoors and a deep appreciation for nature. As a great dad to his children and a favorite teacher to hundreds of students, he exuded a lifelong playful spirit and a humorously irreverent outlook on life, always quick with a joke, balanced by a joyful, giving and loving heart.

A 1965 graduate of Anderson Union High School in Anderson, Calif., he subsequently received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in social studies and anthropology from California State University at Chico.
In 1984, he relocated to Glasgow, where he was able to pursue the myriad of outdoor activities he cherished. While teaching high school mathematics, science and social studies in nearby Frazer, on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, he also worked as a summer seasonal archaeologist for the United States Bureau of Land Management and as a contracted archaeologist for the Army Corps of Engineers. In 2001, he relocated to Anthem and taught at various private charter high schools in Phoenix. While in Bozeman, he assisted in the development of the Dinosaur Playground at Gallatin County Regional Park in Bozeman.

Survivors include his wife of eight years, Mary Skordinsky; his parents, Donald and Joan (Thoreson) Julien of Las Vegas, Nev.; siblings Robert and Claudia Julien of Redding, Calif.; two daughters, April Julien Todd of Belgrade and Erin Julien Sharkey of Cincinnati, Ohio; two grandsons, Jack and Henry Sharkey; sons-in-law Bill Todd and Chris Sharkey; and his former wife of 30 years, Carol (Holmes) Julien, of Bozeman.

Condolences and memorial contributions may be sent to Mary Skordinsky, Post Office Box 74023, Phoenix, AZ  85087-1000.
