Top 10 Moved To Monday

Weather forced the Top 10 Track Meet to be postponed until May 10. More in SPORTS.

While cold weather and rain wiped out nearly all of the sporting events in northeastern Montana over the weekend, it was high winds that caused officials to move the Top 10 track meet from its scheduled date on Tuesday to Monday, May 10.

Winds that were expected to get up to 70 miles per hour, gave way to heavy rain on Tuesday, making officials scramble to find a replacement date for the prestigious event, that brings together the top talent from schools from Havre to the Dakota line and from the Canadian border south to Glendive.

There is a chance that weather could be poor again on Monday, with the forecast for a cool, cloudy day, but rescheduling then would be impossible. The delay already puts pressure on the Class C schools in attendance, who will have a quick turnaround with their district meet scheduled for Wednesday, May 12. The District 3C Meet will be in Wolf Point.

Class B schools have a bit more time, with the District 2B Meet scheduled for Saturday, May 15 in Glasgow.

One of the largest competitions in the state, the complete Top 10 roster wasn't solidified at press time, but participants from Glasgow High School were finalized.

In individual events, Patrick Billingsley will compete in the high jump and 400 meter dash and fellow senior Drew Croy will run in the 200.

Junior Derek Hopkins and freshman Austin Green will run the mile race for the Scotties and Bryce Campbell and Luke Zeiger will each compete in the pole vault.  The only relay the boys will run is the 4x400, which will consist of the team of Billingsley, Croy, Hopkins and Zeiger.

The girls will have decidedly more participants at the home meet, running 10 athletes and competing in both relays.

In the sprints, Taylor Markle will compete in the 100 and Alyssa Sanders will run the 400. In longer distances, Jami Johnson will run in the 800 and Emily Braaten will tackle the two-mile run for the Scotties.

The girls are loaded in the hurdles, with three runners in the 100 hurdles and two in the 300 hurdles. Cecily Selden and Debra Greibel will run the 100 hurdles with Sanders running the 300 hurdles. Senior Quinn Vaira will be running in both events.

The girls' 4x100 relay team consists of Markle, Vaira, Sanders and Selden. The 4x400 team will be Vaira, Siena Dailey, Sanders and Johnson.

In the field, Dailey and Tiffany Wetzel will represent the Scotties in the high jump. Dailey will also participate in the pole vault. Senior Erin Bell is the lone Scottie in the javelin throw.

The participants from the local Class C schools were among the rosters that weren't finished at press time.
