  • Errors, Key Injury Cost Scottie Softball

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 29, 2013

Nothing went the way it was supposed to for the Scottie girls. In their third-straight trip to state, everything was set up to achieve Glasgow’s ultimate goal, a state title. Instead, a rash of errors, mistakes and one big injury cost the Scottie girls two straight losses and an early exit on Friday. “When you go to the state tournament, you have to bring your A-game every game. When you don’t, that’s what happens,” said Head Coach Mark Falcon. The Scottie girls played well in their first gam...

  • Scottie Golfers Play State

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 29, 2013

Experience was the key for Tamrah Pewitt and Makkell Baillargeon in their rounds in Bigfork. Pewitt and Baillargeon, both sophomores, shot their first rounds of state golf at the Class B tournament on May 21-22 at the Eagle Bend Golf Course. “The biggest thing was, they’re young golfers and they got a quality experience,” said Head Coach Dave Riggin. “And they improved the second day, which is what we were looking for.” Pewitt started her tournament with a 127 on Tuesday, the first day of th...

  • Hinsdale Represents Area Class C At State

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 29, 2013

A pair of Raiders scored the only points for area schools at the Class C State Meet in Laurel on Friday and Saturday. Fresh off a five-event sweep at districts and divisionals, Bethany Lacock ran into some tough competition from the other parts of the state. She was still able to place in three events, scoring all 10.33 points for the Lady Raiders, but did not take gold in any. Lacock, a junior, was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 16.43 seconds. She took home the bronze in the... Full story

  • Champs Return For Cat Classic

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 29, 2013

It’s not exactly set up as a tournament of champions, but the 14th annual Glasgow Catfish Classic sure looks like it will be just that. In the 13 previous tournaments, 10 different teams have taken home the title of best catfish duo. Seven of those teams are still together and are in the tournament field on Saturday. An eighth championship duo, Cole Plouff and Mitch McIntyre in 2006, are in the tournament but are now with other partners. “It’s quite simply the best field we’ve had,” said tour...

  • Wrestling Coach Grapple

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 22, 2013

Questions arose about possible new Scottie wrestling coach at the May 15 Glasgow School Board meeting. Trevor Newman, a recent hire to be an English teacher within the district, was on the board agenda to be approved, but the board tabled the item until the next meeting due to procedural hiring guidelines. However, wrestling alumni, fans, athletes, parents and AAU wrestlers showed up to voice their concerns about the hire beforehand. Brian Austin told the board he was concerned about the hiring... Full story

  • Scottie Girls Club Way To State

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 22, 2013

The Scottie girls didn’t know it at the time, but their defeat of Shepherd, 10-5, on Saturday gave them the Eastern B/C Divisional Championship. With the tournament pounded by rain, the divisional championship game was cancelled, giving the Scottie girls, the only undefeated team remaining in the tournament, the title, completed the third of their four goals for the season. “We got our first three objectives out of the way. We took first in our conference, finished the regular season strong and...

  • Scotties In The Mix

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 22, 2013

The Scottie girls led from wire-to-wire. Starting the day with the 3,200-meter run, the Scottie girls tallied 18 points to jump start their 164-point domination of the Northern B Divisional meet on Saturday in Glasgow. Josie Braaten finished first with a time of 11:44 and Amanda Wolff was just behind in second at 12:18.7. It was the first of five events that the Scottie girls had multiple placers. Walker Allen scored the first points for the boys in the 3,200, finishing in sixth for one point. H...

  • Confidence Leads Reds To Pair Of Wins

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 22, 2013

A young team, the Glasgow Reds B team found some confidence after their last road trip to Sidney and beat Glendive in a pair of games on Saturday. The Reds, led by starting pitcher Keil Krumwiede, beat Glendive 10-3 in their first contest on Saturday and then came back to win 9-6 in the night cap. "Confidence was a big thing for a lot of us," said Krumwiede. And confidence in Krumwiede grew with each strike out on Saturday, as he racked up 11 Ks in 4.1 innings of work. Krumwiede also only...

  • Eastern C Divisional Goes Off In Sidney

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 22, 2013

Four of the five Nashua qualifiers placed in two events, Lustre’s Gabby Pierre was impressive on her own, placing in three events and Frazer’s Daniel Horsman placed in one in Sidney to punch their tickets to state. On Wednesday, May 15, Porcupine Lane Nickels took home bronze in both the long runs, finishing the 1,600-meter in 4:42.6 and the 3,200 in 10:55.1. Ryan Padden was third in the 200 with a time of 24.3 and sixth in the 400 at 56.3. Sean Bengochea had a similar day with a bronze in the s...

  • One Game At A Time

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 15, 2013

Heading into the postseason, last year’s run to second in the state for the Scottie girls’ softball team is in their back of their mind. And yet, it isn’t. “We take it one game at a time, one inning at a time, one pitch at a time,” said junior catcher Mariah Stein. It’s a sports cliche. Everybody has heard them at every level of competition. Usually, they’re just platitudes. In this case though, it’s the mindset of the entire team. In 2012, the Scottie girls, mostly comprised of sophomores, wen...

  • District Domination

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 15, 2013

It was complete and total domination for tracksters in red at the District 2B Meet. The Glasgow girls scored 216 points, 82 tallies in front of second-place Plentywood, followed by Malta (96), Wolf Point (49), Poplar (10) and Harlem (2). The boys were not quite as dominant, but were still solidly the best team at the meet, scoring 199 points to Malta’s 163. Plentywood was third with 99, Poplar had 20, Harlem scored 13 and Wolf Point was last with two. The Scotties “came to play,” said Head... Full story

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 15, 2013

Tamrah Pewitt and Makkell Baillargeon will make their Scottie golf debuts at the state tournament this season. The pair will be the only representatives for the Scotties after Pewitt took 11th and Baillargeon was 14th at the Northern B Divisional in Malta on Saturday. Pewitt shot a 118 and Baillargeon shot a 120, both below their season averages. Pewitt came in to the day with a 131 average on the season, including a 126 in Malta on May 4. Baillargeon was sitting at a 123 average coming into...

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 15, 2013

Nashua and Scobey swapped spots in the team scores at the District 3C Meet in Glasgow on May 8. The Nashua boys took the top spot with 132 points, edging out Scobey’s 122. On the girls’ side, the Lady Porcupines were second, 25 points behind Scobey. Hinsdale was third on both sides, with the Lady Raiders finishing with 98 and the boys with 78. Bethany Lacock scored a monster 50 points for the Lady Raiders, finishing in first in all five events she competed: the 100-meter hurdles, the 300 hur...

  • Play Ball!

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 15, 2013

The B-Team Glasgow Reds christened the season on Sunday in Sidney, splitting a pair of games with the Patriots. With a dozen new kids in legion this year, there was bound to be some bumps and bruises early, according to Head Coach Jack Sprague, such as losing command of the strike zone for the pitchers. Reds pitchers walked 11 batters in 13 innings of work split between the two contests. But there were many positives, as well. “We did a lot of things right, there’s a lot of things to get bet...

  • Home Sweet Home

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 8, 2013

Finally playing in front of their town, friends and family, the Glasgow softball team put on a powerful display with an 18-15 win over Sidney on Tuesday. Hundreds came out to see their dominant Scottie girls take on the Lady Eagles after several previous cancellations put any chance of a home contest in doubt. So when the Scottie girls were finally able to play at Sullivan Field, they were thrilled. “They’ve been waiting for this all year,” said Head Coach Mark Falcon. “It’s good to have such... Full story

  • Course Management 101

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 8, 2013

Knowing when to lay up and when to go for the green may be the difference between a drive home and a trip to Bigfork in two weeks for the Scotties. Malta’s course is rife with hazards that force golfers to choose between laying up or shooting for the perfect shot and the low score. But if they don’t make it, snowmen, or worse, may be all too prevalent on a scorecard. Course management has been the Achilles heel of the Scottie golfers so far this season, including the past weekend in Harlem on...

  • Districts Next For Track

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 8, 2013

With the track postseason fast approaching, Scottie coach John LaBonty wants his athletes to take a break. “Right now, we need to rest a little bit,” he said. “We’re a little beat up.” The Scotties’ season started slowly with cancellations and relocated/rescheduled meets constantly shifting their schedule. Recently, however, it’s been a steady stream of competition, including three meets in eight days, starting in Glendive on April 26-27 through the Top Ten on May 1 and then Wolf Point on Satu...

  • Farrell Honored At Top Ten

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 8, 2013

Hundreds of athletes, coaches, parents and fans traversed the Scottie track on Saturday in the slowest lap in Top Ten history. But It was also one of the most important. The lap was honoring long-time Scottie track coach Bob Farrell, who died in April. Farrell was the originator of the Top Ten meet format in Glasgow, a format that has been duplicated throughout the state. This was the first meet without Farrell in attendance in some form. “The lap meant a lot,” said Head Coach John LaBonty. “I...

  • Reds Open Season On The B-Side

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 8, 2013

Last season, the Reds had 14 players on their roster. This year, with an influx of 16-year olds, the Reds have well over 20 players ready to go, enough to give the Reds enough players to roster an A-Team and a B-Team, with a few players on both rosters. American Legion rules allow only 18 players on a postseason roster, and that roster must be set on June 1, giving the Reds very little time to come to a conclusion. The first step towards completing that roster is on Sunday, as the B-team will...

  • Softball Wraps Up Conference

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 1, 2013

On April 18, Scottie softball had not played a single game in conference. Eight days later, they had swept their seven counterparts in the Eastern B Division and earned the top seed in the divisional tournament. They started with a four-game sweep of Colstrip, Stillwater, Huntley Project and Shepherd on April 19 and 20, and then tore through Cut Bank, Shelby and Conrad at the Conrad Invitational for the final three conference games of the season. For good measure, the Scottie girls then dispatch...

  • Driving Home

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 1, 2013

A patented Tiger Woods fist pump finished Luke Gunderson’s day at the windy but sunny and warm Sunnyside Golf Course on Saturday. Standing over a long putt to finish off a team-low round, Gunderson knew that sinking the putt would help take the sting out of a bad start to his day, a four-putt on the first hole of his round. He only needed one putt this time to end his day with an 86, good enough for fourth overall and best on his team to lead the Scotties to the top team score. “We had a goo... Full story

  • Lady Tracksters Continue Roll

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 1, 2013

The Scottie girl tracksters are looking like a runaway favorite for divisionals. The Glasgow girls have won three meets in a row, their most recent a 128-point affair over nine other teams, including four Class A squads, in Glendive on Friday and Saturday. “Right now, our distance kids are doing really well and our hurdlers are doing really well,” said Head Coach John LaBonty. It was the distance runs and the hurdles that carried the Scottie girls to the top spot in Glendive, accumulating 70...

  • Scottie Boys' Track Still Experimenting

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 1, 2013

With the district tournament coming quickly, the Scotties are still searching for the right mixture. The Scotties were able to place fourth in Glendive on Friday and Saturday, beating out Class A’s Sidney and Hardin and seven other schools, but falling short of Glendive, Miles City and Culbertson. That’s the second-straight meet the Scotties have finished in the top four. And it’s also the second-straight meet that personal records fell in bunches – 16 PRs were broken by the Scotties in Glendiv...

  • Porcupines Play Host In Wolf Point

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 1, 2013

As Nashua hosted their meet in Wolf Point, it was a Lady Raider who stole the show. Staying true to Hinsdale’s moniker, Bethany Lacock raided the Porcupine Invitational for 40 individual points, the meet high, carrying the Lady Raiders to a sixth-place finish on Saturday, the best of any Valley County girls’ squad. Lacock scored four golds, taking the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles, pole vault, high jump and triple jump. Lacock finished in 52.7 seconds in the hurdles, vaulted 7- 0 in the pole...
