Lustre Christian High School Participates In Democracy Days

Lustre Christian High School was one of 19 schools who recently participated in Democracy Days, one of Civics Under the Big Sky’s (CUBS) signature programs, is a peer-to-peer voter registration (VR) drive designed to remove all possible barriers to students’ ability to get registered and represent their values in local elections.

Utilizing the Montana Online Voter Registration Portal, CUBS partners with students, librarians and teachers across the state to get new voters registered right in their schools. CUBS provides hosts with training, materials needed to run a VR table as well as fun swag to promote their events.

Hosts of Democracy Days shared the following impacts of this program on their school. While many aren’t old enough to vote yet, seeing the table and their peers engaged with the process produced many open and essential conversations around registering to vote. One person shared that, “I learned a lot about introducing the concept of nonpartisanship to students and how to frame voting as a civic responsibility.”

CUBS aims for young people in Montana to be informed and civically engaged and this event is an important first step.

Democracy Days this year reached new heights, with a record number of participants spanning further across Montana than ever before. From Hamilton to Miles City and so many places in between a record number of students registered, exceeding 120 newly registered young voters across 19 different communities.
