NC Boys Win One, Lose Two

The North Country Mavericks picked up a win early last week but dropped a pair of competitive games last weekend.

The Mavs defeated the Nashua Porcupines 60-57 on Jan. 23 and fell 54-49 to the Circle Wildcats on Jan. 26, and 61-59 to the Turner Tornadoes on Jan. 27.

The Mavericks are scheduled to face the Scobey Spartans in Scobey on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m.

In the Mavs win over Nashua, Blaine Downing led the charge with 34 points. Coy Bowman and Laytin Erickson both scored eight points. Jake Brown had five points, Kade Strommen had three points, and Chase Albus had two points.

The Mavericks gained a 19-14 lead in the first quarter, and extended their lead 35-24 by halftime.

The Mavericks led 51-36 heading into the fourth quarter, prior to a 17-2 run by Nashua that started with 5:36 left in the game. The Porkies ultimately tied the game 57-all with 44 seconds remaining. Brown was fouled on a jumpshot with 28.9 seconds left in the game and he split the pair. On the next possession, Brown was fouled after gathering a defensive rebound on a missed trey attempt by Nashua. Brown made both shots, leaving only eight seconds on the clock for Nashua who trailed 60-57. The Mavs defense held on to win the game.

The Mavericks attempted to spoil Circle's victory last Friday, as North Country clawed back into the game late despite a 13-point deficit. The Mavericks tied the game 39-all with 3:26 remaining, and kept the game within a couple of possessions, but fell 54-49.

Downing led the Mavs in the effort with 17 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists. Bowman had 12 points, five assists, and three rebounds. Erickson had 11 points and five rebounds. Kade Strommen had eight points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Chase Albus had one point.

The Mavericks were not able to hold on to a late lead in their loss to Turner last Saturday night. Downing led North Country with 20 points. Bowman had 17 points. Erickson had nine points, Strommen had seven points. Brown had five points, and Albus had one point.
