Ice Dawgs Win Two Over Helena Enter State Tourney as Third Seed

The Glasgow Ice Dawgs downed the Helena Bighorns in a home double header in the last weekend of regulation play. Glasgow won 4-2 Saturday on Senior Night and skated away to an 8-1 victory Sunday morning.

Ice Dawgs captain Michael Hoyer started the scoring action Saturday, hitting an even-strength goal 4:37 into the first period with help from Josh Llewellyn. Helena tied the game with 1:36 left in the opening period.

The visiting Bighorns netted the only goal of the second period, scoring with 11:15 remaining before intermission.

The third period was all Glasgow. Connor Koski struck two minutes into the third, scoring an even-strength goal with assists from Bode Barnett and Tatum Hansen. Hansen scored the game-winning goal 5:58 later with help from Barnett. He also scored the final goal of the game on an empty net with 23 seconds remaining.

Aidin Wilkowski earned the win for the Dawgs, turning away six of eight attempts on his net for a 75.0 save percentage. Glasgow put 54 pucks on the Helena goal.

Helena was called for four infractions and eight penalty minutes while Glasgow had 12 minutes on six penalties. Neither team converted on the man-advantage.

Lex Fairclough, roughing and Dillon Hughes, roughing, sat in the first for the Dawgs. Zevin Kummerfeldt, tripping, and Hansen, interference, served time in the second. Hughes, roughing, and Hoyer, interference, were sent to the box in the third.

Helena struck first in game two of the double-header, but would fail to find the back of the net in the remaining 49 minutes, 13 seconds of play. The Dawgs struck back with 14 seconds left in the first period to tie the game. Charlie Cornwell slipped the puck past the Bighorns’ goalie with help from Hoyer.

Hoyer scored the game-winning goal 6:26 into the second period with an assist from Fairclough.

The third period was again all Glasgow’s as the Ice Dawgs put six more pucks past the Helena netminder.

Hoyer hit a power play goal with help from Barnett 22 seconds into the third and Tavin Boland scored, assist Hansen, 49 seconds later. Hoyer and Barnett teamed up again with 12:13 remaining for a Hoyer hat trick. Barnett added his own goal 15 seconds after that with an assist from Aiden Price. Hansen scored with 4:14 remaining and Barnett scored the final goal of the game with 3:54 remaining on the clock with an assist from Sam Knierim.

Wilksowski earned the win with a 93.3 save percentage, turning away 14 attempts on his net. Glasgow fired 48 shots at the Helena goal.

Glasgow went 1-for-4 on the man-advantage while shutting down Helena’s three power plays. Helena had 39 minutes in the box on 10 calls while Glasgow served 10 minutes for six penalties.

Trevor Dulaney was called for interference in the first and Hunter sat for roughing in the second. Hunter was sent to the box for roughing again in the third. Hughes, roughing, and Kummerfeldt, a 2-and-10 head contact, also sat in the final period.

Glasgow finished the regular season in third place. Miles City took first with an undefeated 20-0-0 record and 40 points. Missoula sits in second with a 16-4-0 record and 34 points while Glasgow took third, also with a 16-4-0 record, but with 32 points.

The Dawgs travel to Bozeman for the Big Sky High School League State Tournament Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 23-26. Glasgow opens the tournament with a game against the Salmon Rapids at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. They face the Great Falls Americans at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24 in pool play before entering seeded play, which begins at 3 p.m. Friday.
