Thunder Represent Glasgow at State Swim Meet

The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder Swim Team traveled to Columbia Falls fro the 2021 State Swim meet July 31 and Aug. 1. The team returned with one state champion and a number of swimmers who cracked the top five.

Combined, the boys and girls earned 249 points and placed ninth out of the 20 teams at the meet. The Glasgow boys earned 40 points and a 16th place finish while the Thunder girls racked up 209 points and a sixth-place finish.

Hadley Edwards, 7-years-old, earned the only first-place finish for Glasgow, taking the Girls 8 & Under 25 Back race slicing through the water in 22.31 seconds. The young swimmer knocked over a second off her time from the prelims, where she finished the race in 23.69 and third place.

Abigail Kulczyk earned the only individual second-place finish for Glasgow when she swam the Girls 13-14 100 Fly finals in 1:26.55. The 14-year-old placed third in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:32.25 and fifth in the 50 Fly, finishing the race in 35.22.

Piper Johnson, 13, placed third in the Girls 13-14 Free race, finishing in 1:12.67. Kimber Dulaney, also 13, placed third in the Girls 13-14 100 Back, 1:25.73, and fifth in the 200 Free, 2:44.14. Grace Reyes, 12-years-old, earned a fifth place finish in the Girls 11-12 50 Fly with her time of 42.89.

Raelee Dowden, a senior leader on the Thunder team, placed third in the Girls 15-19 100 Fly with her time of 1:26.85. The 17-year-old also earned a fourth place finish in the 100 Breast, completing the race in 1:30.66.

The Thunder shone in the relay events, with five of their 10 teams placing in the top five at the state meet. Wade Fuhrman, 9; Nikolas Kulczyk,10; Aaron Zoanni, 10 and Holt Huntsman,10, joined together to place third in the Boys 9-10 Freestyle Relay event. The four boys swam the race in 1:15.83, knocking more than two seconds off their seed time of 1:17.88.

Kimber Dulaney, 13; Piper Johnson, 13; Allie Palm, 14 and Abigail Kulczyk, 14, swam the Girls 13-14 Freestyle Relay in 2:09.27 to cruise to a second place finish. Their finals time improved by over three seconds from their seed time of 2:12.54. The four joined forces again, though in a slightly different order – Dulaney, Kulczyk, Johnson and Palm – for a third place finish in the Girls 13-14 Medley Relay. They finished the event in 2:32.98, nearly three seconds faster than their seed time of 2:35.94.

In the Girls 11-12 200 Medley Relay, Haleigh Huntsman, 11; Kaylly Turner, 12; Grace Reyes, 12 and Peyton Birkoski, 11, finished in 2:57.76 to take third place. They improved more than two seconds from their seed time 3:00.41.

The Girls 15-19 Freestyle Relay team was composed of Ava Reyes, Haylly Turner, Raelee Dowden and Myli Swindler. The four swimmers completed their race in 2:20.88 for a fifth place finish. The quartet also improved significantly, knocking over a second off their seed time of 2:22.31.
