Scottie Boys Beat Rivals on Both Sides of Glasgow

The Glasgow Scottie boys basketball turned in a pair of exciting games, and wins, last week. A fourth-quarter rally gave the Scotties a 12-point win over the Mustangs Thursday in Malta, followed by another strong fourth quarter against the Wolf Point Wolves. The Scotties took a 55-45 win against the Wolves in the Dawg Pound.

Coach Paul Yoakam was proud of his team's weekend of wins, particularly with the victory over the rival Mustang. "Malta was the best overall game we've played the last 2 years," he said. The Scotties won the game on balanced scoring from four of their five starters and keeping their fouls down.

Glasgow held a four point lead at the end of the first quarter, 15-11, but they allowed Malta back in the game in the second quarter. The Scotties took a three-point deficit into the locker room at halftime with the Mustangs up 26-23, who were powered through the second by Rex Williamson.

Back out on the hardwood, Glasgow clawed the lead back after scoring 18 points in the third quarter. Malta put up 14 points at the same time, giving Glasgow the one-point lead of 41-40 to head into the fourth quarter. Glasgow exploded in the final quarter putting up 19 points while holding Malta to eight. The Scotties claimed the 60-48 victory on the Mustangs' court.

Keigan Skolrud led the Scotties with 18 points, included 4-of-6 from the line. He was closely followed by Trevor Klind, 15, and Collinsowrth, 14. Klind nailed four shots from beyond the perimeter, as well as a field goal and a free throw. Collinsworth went 6-for-7 from the line and hit four field goals for the Scotties. Vinny Chappell added nine points, on a three pointer, two field goals and 2-for-2 from the line. Bergen Miller contributed two points. Yoakam said, "It was nice to Klind, Collinsworth and Chappell step up and hit big shots."

Glasgow had five fouls in the first half while Malta had only three. In the second half, Glasgow held their infractions to six while Malta was called for 11. Glasgow hit 15 of 19 free throw shots, with all but one coming in the second half. Dalton Sand led the Scotties in fouls with four. Chappell and Skolrud had three each and Klind was called for one.

Glasgow was slower to start on Friday at home and looked to be in trouble early in the game as Wolf Point took an early lead in the game and held a 13-9 advantage at the end of the first. Each of the Scotties five starters put in points in the second quarter, outscoring the Wolves 18-11 to take a three point lead into half time.

Wolf Point's Kraven Smith spurred on his Wolves in the third quarter, putting in eight points as the visitors outscored Glasgow 15-13 in the third. Glasgow built on their one-point lead in the fourth quarter, putting in 15 points as their defense shut down Wolf Point, allowing only six points. The Scotties claimed a 10-point win over the Wolves, 55 to 45.

"We came out a little flat and were out of sync the entire game," Yoakam said. "It was a good sign that the boys were able to keep at it and still come out with the win. Our effort carried us on that one." Skolrud again led his team, putting up 22 points, including 8-of-12 from the line. Miller had three from outside the perimeter, adding 10 points for Glasgow. Klind also had 10 points on four field goals and 2-for-2 from the line. Collinsworth added nine points, and Chappell and Sand had two each.

Wolf Point had seven fouls in the first half and 13 in the second half, with Silk, Corey Martel and Jack Sprague fouling out. Glasgow was called for seven in the first and six fouls in the second half. Klind racked up four fouls, followed by Sand and Skolrud with three each. Collinsworth and Chappell had two a piece.

The Scotties host the Scobey Spartans Thursday, Feb. 4, where they will be hoping to avenge an 80-26 loss suffered on Jan. 9 in Scobey. The C squad will play in the church gym at 5 p.m. JV action will be in the GHS gymnasium and begin at 3:30 p.m. The varsity game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 5, the Scotties will travel to Saco to take on the North Country Mavericks. The Scottie boys won a comeback game against the Mavs on Jan. 7 in Glasgow. Action will begin at 5 p.m. with a shortened JV game with four-minute quarters. The varsity game is scheduled for tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
