Scottie Cross Country Debuts in Sidney

The Glasgow Scottie Cross Country teams opened up their regular season in Sidney on Aug. 29. The girls ended their meet in fourth place behind all Class A schools-Laurel, Custer County and Fergus. The boys came in fifth overall behind Fergus, Custer County, Laurel and Wolf Point.

It was also the first COVID-adjusted meet and came with some interesting restrictions for the athletes. Junior and third-place finisher for the girls, Iris McKean, commented, "It was okay," she laughed, "it was a really weird meet with all the COVID restrictions, but I think for all the variables it went pretty well."

Coach Rod Karst commented earlier in the season that numbers were down this year for the teams, but some returning talent made him hopeful for a good year. McKean, echoed that sentiment saying, "I think we definitely have some work to do, but I think we have a lot of capabilities to do very well. In Sidney we were the first Class B team so that was really helpful."

Going forward McKean said the team needs to gain some confidence in themselves and work out the kinks. She commented that the team is pretty young and small with seven girls. The Scotties fielded two seniors, one junior, two sophomores and two freshmen. That doesn't deter her though. She pointed out that the times at Sidney were slow for all the teams and the course is wrong, but she is confident the team's times will get progressively faster as the year goes on.

It was the same story on the boys' side. Senior Carl Zabrocki said it was strange to run pretty much alone the entire course instead of holding with a pack of Scotties like he was used to in years' past. "It was definitely really strange not running against everyone so I was pretty much out there by myself the whole meet so the times were a little slow," explained Zabrocki who claimed fifth place overall in Sidney.

He also thought the team did good at the meet, but sees room for improvement. Specifically, Zabrocki thinks the team needs to work to build pace and push each other to race against other runners at future meets. He also thinks that although the team is small they are set to do well in 2020.

"I think we're doing pretty good," said Zabricki. "We don't have a huge team this year, but have a strong team. I think we could definitely be up there."
