Glendive

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team has reached the halfway point of their 2018 season. They competed in Glendive June 30 and July 1, and the team placed fifth overall. Senior swimmer Katie Kaiser earned high point in her age group for the third week in-a-row. High point is awarded to each boy and girl swimmer that achieves the highest points in each age group. Kaiser swept her age group with first-place finishes in each of her individual events.

According to head coach Nicole Arnold, the team showed great improvement and noted several athletes that finished in the top three of their individual events: Peyten Birkoski (25m backstroke- 2nd), Raelee Dowden (200m individual medley- 3rd), Katie Kaiser (50m freestyle/100m backstroke/400m freestyle - 1st), Sophia Larson (50m breaststroke - 3rd), Tommi Prewett (200m individual medley/100m breaststroke/ 50m butterfly- 2nd), Ava Reyes (100m backstroke - 3rd), Dalton Sand (100m freestyle- 1st, 200m individual medley/100m butterfly-2nd), and Myli Swindler (50m backstroke – 3rd).

Other noteworthy performances came from Malin Beck who only competed on Saturday but took off 3.54 seconds in his 50m backstroke which put him in a solid third place finish.

Prewett continued to shine as she swam the 100m butterfly as an exhibition for the first time. Her finishing time of 1:32.31 would have earned her first place if she had chosen the event for one of her three individual races.

Arnold had praise for the bantam girls and their performances at the meet. "They crushed the swim meet this weekend," she explained. "Haleigh, Peyten, Aubrey and Emersyn all made it into Sunday in one or more of their individual events and together competed in a medley relay where they placed second."

"This week's GKST Athlete of the Week voted on by the coaches goes to Myli Swindler - better known as assistant-assistant coach Myli," said Arnold. "She can be found every single swim meet that she attends with a stop watch in her hand ready to tell the GKST swimmers what their times were after their races."

The coaches feel that Swindler is a great asset to the team, describing her as enthusiastic and encouraging. "It was great to see Myli's hard work pan out in the pool this weekend," said Arnold. "Myli was able to PR in all the events she swam, including her individual events, the event she exhibitioned and her relay splits. All together she cut off a total of 11.57 seconds." However, the most exciting part of the meet for Myli was that she had a legal backstroke turn both Saturday and Sunday and had an amazing breaststroke pullout that all the stroke judges commended her on.

Sidney

On July 7 and 8, the Glasgow swimmers were in Sidney to compete. They placed sixth out of nine teams. The temperatures reached the upper 90's both days of the meet, which can negatively impact any athlete's performance. The team managed to keep their spirits high, according to head coach Nicole Arnold, and did a good job of cheering each other on.

Leading the team with top three finishes was Jordan Billingsley (100m backstroke-1st), Peyten Birkoski (25m backstroke- 1st), Haleigh Huntsman (25m breaststroke- 2nd), Trevor Johnson (50m freestyle/50m butterfly- 3rd), Katie Kaiser (50m freestyle/100m backstroke/400m freestyle- 1st), and Ava Reyes (100m backstroke- 2nd). Kaiser remains undefeated and took home her 4th high-point trophy for the season.

Arnold announced Ava Reyes as the GKST Athlete of the Week. "Ava had a break through meet this past weekend," said Arnold of Reyes. "This season Ava has been stuck in a rut when it came to racing due to a sore shoulder. She was performing well at meets but was always falling short of her personal best times in her events. This weekend that changed as Ava PR'ed in all ofher individual events and took off a total of 7.5 seconds.

Arnold continued her paraise for Reyes, saying, "This meet finally displayed Ava's hard work and diligence this season and we look forward to seeing what she can accomplish when she is fully healthy. On top of Ava's amazing performance in the pool she remained a wonderful support system for the team."

Arnold summarized other noteworthy performances: Allie Palm and Kimber Dulaney both put up personal best times in their individual events. Haleigh Huntsman also who swam the breaststroke for the first time and finished 2nd with a great time.

She added that they held a parent/coach 4x100 relay with Hunter Kopff, Nicole Arnold, Rachel Erickson, and Josh Palm competing for Glasgow. Despite a strong field of competitors, Glasgow finished the fun race in third place.
