Homemade Gifts

Remember days of the past when gifts from your female friends were most always homemade?

I remember the fancy hankies that were tucked in your birthday card. Weddings found many gifts of hand-embroidered tea towels (dish towels) or pillow cases. I remember that we had a lot of bath towels with fancy crocheted edging on them. Well, that was back in the day when women didn’t work outside of the home unless it was gardening, canning, childcare, helping hubby with the farming and maybe working cattle, so I guess we had more time. But I also remember, no TV, computers or phones. Maybe no electric lights, so maybe there was more time in the day.

I am getting ready for a trip that involves flying and a few layovers. I actually thought about stuffing some dish towels in my carry on so that I would have something to do, however as the day draws closer I have convinced myself that it is probably really stupid.

I do still love that stuff though. My husband brought me a whole box of lovely hand-worked pillow cases and that was a better gift than flowers. Of course, I can’t share them with the female members of my family as they flat out refuse to iron them. Oh well--life is all about change, but we can still keep our treasurers.
