Glasgow Slain By Spartans in Playoff Rematch

Scotties Finish Season 3-7

Glasgow mustered enough fight on Halloween night to avoid repeating the shutout of Sept. 11, but the red and white's six points crumpled as a paper shield under Baker's iron-toothed, 47-point onslaught.

The Scotties second trip to the Spartans' turf mirrored the first in all but the 42-0 scoreline - though not by much did the two portraits differ. "We played hard," said coach Greg Liebelt, "but in the end we were overmatched, and made too many mistakes on both sides of the football to affect the result in our favor."

The visitors' advances were swatted to the turf as a one-winged flea by a rabid dog. The absence of Cache Younkin (concussion) and Benji Phillips (shoulder) left an already-thin Glasgow offense grasping in the dark for at best a steady foothold, at least a piece of candy to comfort them in their insurmountable struggle. Baker, ever the proud, powerful hosts, provided them nothing but toilet paper rolls.

"It played out as we expected," said Liebelt. "We had no Benji, no Cache, but the guys played competitively, moreso than in the first game. This game was a testament to how much they've improved since week three."

At halftime, the score was 26-6. Glasgow's touchdown came on a 26-yard pass from Trent Herbert to Kasey Seyfert. With Younkin out, the offense stayed on to attempt a two-point conversion. It failed.

Baker strengthened its stranglehold in the second half on the back of a 99 yard interception return-touchdown by two-way starter Luke Gonsioroski.

"[He] made the difference for them once again," said Liebelt. "We had chances on defense, forced some turnovers, but we didn't capitalize."

Liebelt's boys now enter the offseason; their rollercoaster Fall slashed many a gash in their tartan fur. To advance their purpose and arrive next year a buccaneering group of battle-worn veterans, these wounds need not be licked, but studied as they form into scars, the great teachers of self-purpose.

Four seniors - Ethan Etchart, Cody King, Lane Nickels, and Lane Provencher - graduate in the spring. The rest will return, if not wiser, then more stoic, their muscles prepared for the daily beating a successful season demands.

Baker advances to the Class B Quarterfinals to host Manhattan. Glasgow's efforts turn towards weights, film, and introspection.

The high school offers a lifting program for course credit to sophomores-seniors in which the boys not participating in basketball or wrestling will enroll.

"We'll continue to get better," said Liebelt. "There are a lot of guys returning, and a few guys who didn't play this year who may turn out [in 2016]. Our goal is to get participation numbers back to where they were not so long ago. For those guys not in a winter sport, their goal is to hit the weights whenever they can and be ready to go next year."
