Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Editor's Notes

This week, I'm happy to include a letter from one of our staff on the subject of gay marriage. I should say a thing or two about that.

Firstly, we welcome letters from anyone who wants to have their voice added to the broader discussion on virtually any topic relevant to this community. That said, if a staffer wants to chime in, I tend to err on the side of featuring their commentary as a column. Given more time, we would have done just that with Georgie Kulczyk's fine letter.

In this case, the letter in question is short and was originally intended for a social media audience. The choice to run it was mine and doesn't reflect the editorial prerogative of the Courier on such a controversial subject (one way or the other).

Personally, I support Georgie's generous sentiments completely. Any reporting I do will rarely if ever exhibit my own biases on political issues, but the subject of expanded rights for all members of our great nation is of profound importance to me and that fact ought to be acknowledged forthrightly for readers to keep in mind when assessing my point of view.

Speaking of point of view, the author of a recently-submitted letter directed at our own Virgil Vaupel, has come forward to me in strict confidence. I'd like to thank them for doing so. Anytime a reader steps forward to make their feelings known in this community, we all grow and learn as a result.

I mentioned the letter in question along with some other anonymously submitted letters in the June 17 installment of Editor's Notes. While it remains unclear whether the author will consent to have their identity revealed at this time, the letter itself will be among the others selected for next week's edition.

As always, V.V. will have the option of responding in print, or shrugging bemusedly and illuminating and entertaining our readers on another subject.
