Getting Your Brains Back

A Short Tribute To Mom

One of the best pieces of advice I've ever heard came from our very own Terry Trang from the Courier.

"You don't have any brains," she said.

We have discussed kids many times. I've truly enjoyed being a step mom to three wonderful kids, who of course know how to push things to the limits, but who also accepted me as one of the clan quite quickly.

As we begin to face the pre-teen years, I've realized that I apparently know nothing. Adults just don't understand and of course my kids know how to do everything better.

It makes me flash back to my teen years and cringe about all the times I felt, or even spoke the same things to my own mother. Boy, in many ways now - nearly 20 years later - was she right.

Trang did tell me that one day I'd get my brains back, when the kids magically say the words, "you were right."

I realize I gave my mom's brains back around the time my first marriage ended. It seemed like all those life lessons that she had been pounding into my head for years came back at a very crucial time. Of course, I also had a wonderful grandmother who enforced that women could do anything, and be anyone.

So here's to all the mothers out there that have, or maybe don't have their brains. Happy Mother's Day.
