Hinsdale Beats Scobey, Frazer, Stays On Top In 3C

Their perfect conference record on the line, the Hinsdale Raider boys took to the court to maintain their perfecto against the Scobey Spartans. Must have been a slow night for the Scobey girls because I saw Erin Wahl and several of the Spartan girls team in attendance along with the sparse crowd from Scobey.

Hinsdale Raider Dallas Capdeville had an unselfish night giving up the ball to a team mate instead of shooting it himself. He tallied just 6 points, 6 rebounds and had 8 assists. He hit 1 of 2 from the line and nailed one three pointer.

Wyatt Pattison earned the star this night. He was all over the court with some great defense, getting down court on fast breaks and hitting his shots. He went 10 of 12 from the charity stripe and turned in 22 pernts, which was high for the game. Unofficially I have him with 10 rebounds for a double double and with 2 assists. Nice game Wyatt.

Lukas Johnson added another double double to his resume, fighting for 15 rebounds and adding 13 beans to the team's tally. When I say “fighting for,” I mean just that folks. Nearly every rebound he dragged down had several or more Scobey arms in there fighting for the ball. I'm betting Lukas is feeling it today! He also had a couple assists and a couple blocked shots.

For Kyle Albus it was just another day at the office as he popped for 9 points, including two threebies. He didn't get but a couple rebounds but that's not his real job. He plays defense well to earn his spot in the starting lineup. He added 3 assists to the team's total of over 20. Brett Johnson scored 4 points and was his usual bulldog-self on defense. Cache Younkin played some and hauled in 3 rebounds and had a blocked shot. Logan McColly also saw action. Logan was high team scorer with 10 in the JV game (Hinsdale lost) and John McColly hit for 6 in that game.

By my count the Raiders and Spartans tied in the “oh-my-goshness” category with 27 turnovers apiece each. You heard me right. Fifty-four total give-aways in 32 minutes of playing time. Yikes! Proved me wrong though. I've mentioned three or five times in previous columns that turnovers cost games. Seems the Raiders can win in spite of the huge numbers of TOs. It also proved me right in saying turnovers cost games as the Spartans lost after committing 27 or so errors.

After eight minutes of play the Raiders held a 16 to 2 lead over the Spartans due to stellar play, good passing and a minimum of oopsies. Dallas made a nice drive which drew the hoop and the harm which he hit for three the hard way. Lukas hit most of his points working the paint and working it well. Albus nailed a long range unmanned missile followed by a Capdeville threebie. It was clearly all Raiders through three quarters and three minutes but with a twenty-three pernt lead the wheels started unravelling from the Raiders chariot and in the blink of an eye they went from “playing to win” to “playing to not lose” as the Spartans capatalized on some unforced Raider errors to close the gap to just seven points. The Raider faithful was getting restless.

But as the Raiders are prone to do, they got out the shovels and dug theyselves outta' the hole and eked out the win, 56 to 39. Whew!

The big contest of the season came the next night at Frazer with both teams wanting to keep their unblemished conference record intact. More on that game in a later broadcast.

HINSDALE

AT FRAZER

Frazer had their only lead of the game when they scored the first bucket of the contest last Saturday at Frazer. The Raiders took the lead shortly thereafter and held it to the final blast of the buzzer.

Hinsdale led 21 to 13 after 8 minutes and 35 to 24 at the half. Frazer came from behind in the fourth quarter to make the deficit just seven points and outscored the Raiders 24 to 21 in the final eight minutes but to no avail.

This was a physical game right from the opening tipoff with Frazer keeping at least two of its big men guarding Hinsdale's 6-6 center Lukas Johnson trying to wear him down. Didn't work for Frazer, though. Luke was tired toward the end but he wasn't to be pushed around and scored 16 pernts, all PB's while hauling down 8 rebounds. He pick-pocketed a couple times as well.

Dallas Capdeville scored 12, rebounded 9 and had 7 assists for a pretty solid game. Kyle Albus turned in 8 points, two 3's and was 2 for 2 from the charity stripe. Brett Johnson had a couple buckets, a threebie and was 3 for 3 from the line for eight points, 3 assists, 2 steals and 3 rebounds. Cache Younkin and Logan McColly got some playing time.

The player earning the star this game was Wyatt Pattison. Seems like he was personally involved in every play either scoring, rebounding or playing tough defense. He just missed (by that much) another double double scoring 26 points (10 for 18) and 6-11 freebies. He got 9 rebounds along with 1 steal and 1 assist and no turn overs. Great game Wyatt...again.

With three players in double figures, team rebounds 37, 14 turnovers and 15 assists, the Raiders turned in an excellent game and only committed 11 personal fouls for the 32 minutes of play. That was a solid game folks and an enjoyment to watch.

The timbre was set for the game when Lukas went up and in for a PB through three Frazer defenders, Dallas hit a three and Kyle, not to be outdone, followed with a trey of his own. Then Dallas grabbed a defensive rebound and base-balled it to the other end where Wyatt hauled it in, took a step, faked right, went left and put it through that little hoop thingie for the deuce.

Brett tangled with a couple Frazer players for a rebound and came out the winner taking the sphere coast to coast but missed the bunny. Wyatt was there to clean up the garbage but his shot didn't drop. He got his own rebound and with a couple Bearcubs hanging on him he tried again. No go but he finally got a whistle and shot two freebies making one.

Kyle got “hampered” on a shot and hit both his free throws as did Brett on the next Hinsdale possession. Lukas got a couple ORPB's, that had the crowd humming and Dallas hit Wyatt for a baseline “how-did-he-do-that” reverse layup.

A couple or more 3's by Frazers Daniel Horsman brought the Bearcubs to within 7 beans, but then Wyatt hit Brett in the corner and Brett nailed a NBN'er. On the next possession, after stealing the ball, Dallas assisted Lukas for a deuce. Then a Frazer turnover led to Dallas hitting a tough two and a little later he saw Wyatt open on the base line and zinged him a hot one. Wyatt drove and put it up and in for a Hinsdale 16 point lead with just 1:19 to go.

Hinsdale 70, Frazer 57.

It was, indeed an excellent game for the Hinsdale Raiders, unbeaten and the conference leader.

That's it for now folks. Thanks for listening
